Chagall loved Paris, which was the centre of the art world for much of his life, and many of his paintings and prints are replete with the imagery of that great city. In 1954, he produced a series of lithographs known as "Paris Fantastique", a celebration of the city of lights in which his deep affection for Paris is vividly expressed: colours are rich and saturated, seeming to illuminate the iconic Parisian landmarks of Opera, Notre Dame and the Eiffel Tower, while above the rooftops the familiar motifs of floating lovers, bouquets of flowers and fanciful creatures infuse the scenes with a hint of the artist's subconscious world. "Paris Fantastique" is justifiably one of Chagall's most popular series of prints.
