The work took sixteen years to complete and ten engravers were engaged in producing the illustrations, which depicted species from Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. The garden itself was destroyed by invading Swedish troops in 1633; however, it has recently been reconstructed and was opened to the public in 1998.
